#100days100scenes: M Bole toh Munnabhai aur Mumbai

Munnabhai MBBS , put the tapori streetsmartness , Mumbai practicality ( time khoti nahi karne ka) and the direct dil se wala emotion in a movie that stood out for its unique plot – where a tapori enters the medical college by gaming the system and telling the medics that treating patients is not just about technique but also providing the warmth for them to get better.

The movie is famous for introducing the jaadu ki jhappi , that warm hug that you can give to someone who is suffering or distraught saying things will get better. It also takes on the system in a humorous way, the medical system with its administrative complexities, disinterested doctors and general apathy for the patients.

Sanjay Dutt as Munnabhai is one of those titular roles where you can’t even imagine any other actor even coming close to essaying this role since you feel Sanjay is so natural at playing this role. Ably supported by Arshad Warsi as Circuit it’s one of those rare camaraderie between boss and his right hand man cum drinking mate.  Boman Irani as the college dean keeps the system intact and has his own laughter therapy to deal with it. Sunil Dutt  playing  the reel life father gives the strong family value piece, since Munna is trying to be a doctor only for his father.

So like a great Indian movie, it has the systemic problems,  superb humour laced with witty references to the problem at hand and that dollop of emotions especially in the scenes involving the patients. Its also very Mumbai in its lingo - bole toh, apun ka, aayela hai etc.

Although some of the scenes in the medical college go well beyond practicality, the  best one is the body scene where Munnabhai orders Circuit to get a dead body for his own practicals !
