Remixing Sheher ki Ladki is like a desecrating an institution .
Shaher ki Ladki was a
captivating song when I was growing up in the 90s. It meant so many things to
the trying to grow up teens of the 90s like me, when we were battling pimples and general
awkwardness when dealing with ladies yet embracing 5 years of liberalization.
Shaher ki ladki was
not just a song, it was a bellwether of hope riding on Raveenas sashays and
Sunil Shettys adrenaline. It was an economic lesson wrapped in a song that had
more data points than a Reuters screen. It set a high standard for everything - the sheher, the ladki and hence the ladka. For the first time in the 90s, there was an item song that
did not titillate but showed the movement of the country's fashionable fate.
In the years of
1996, Shehar ki ladki was a transformative effort for these reasons
- Sanpada swag of hope- no amount
of Badshah's Gabruness can give you the Sanpada swag . Sanpada although badly named was a mini - singapore in design by mumbai's low standards !
New Mumbai was that new kickasss city 10 kms away from Mumbai where you have
railway stations that look ‘phoren’ and don’t have defecation on the railway
track – allowing Raveena to do a catwalk on them. Never had railway stations looked so cool ( except the class act of chiku buku rayile in gentleman) ... What Petronas Tower was to KL , Sanpada, JuiNagar
, Nerul and Vashi railway stations were supposed to create that wow factor for
Mumbai. Similarly traveling by
Hovercraft from Navi Mumbai to Mumbai was a super cool idea , a step up to Discovery Bay in HK. This was the hope we had
at that time , that New Mumbai will be this world class city transforming
everything around it...
-
A generational swing -for the first time in the 90s, an item
song did not mean a wet sari. Raveena Tandon had proved that she could out
raunch anyone with Tip Tip barsa pani in 1994.
The same Raveena comes here in classic, chic avatars , walks like a
dream, moves instead of thrusting and
sashays instead of thumking. You wake up to this new transformation
in attire , carrying oneself , and signaling the end of sarkaylo khatiya to
getting jiggy with it. Even now in the remix, Raveena out moves Diana Penty
with a 10x margin …
full marks for effort
Suniel Shetty could dance … or look synchronized. It shows what you can
do if you are determined. Muscles cannot move women unless your moves can rock. In the same year Suniel
Shetty did an encore with Jhanjhariya ..He showed the way where men started to
focus on moves on the dance floor. If Suniel Shetty could do it, he lowered the
floor but raised the bar.
X-factor
The X-factor with the helmet helmed riders. This made the song riveting.
It seemed Street Hawks had landed on Mumbai with a franchise that Suniel Shetty
had bought.
