Eklavya Movie Review

Eklavya: A thumbs down below expectations Vidhu Vinod Chopra is an interesting film maker. His first outing Parinda was a classic for the 80s. But 1942 a love story was unusually bland with no one feeling much for Anil Kapoor's dilemma. Mission Kashmir again did not do enough justice to its theme as a movie about terrorism. If we look at all these movies, the central theme could in a way be construed as decision making dilemmas: what is right and wrong in a grandiose canvass (underworld, freedom struggle, terrorism). Vidhu Vinod Chopra extends the same with a liberal use of dharma concepts and Mahabharat references right from the title sequence itself. The movie starts with Amitabh in his baritone explaining the story of Eklavya to a kid( a voice that reminds of you the old DD chanda ek sooraj ek NFDC cartoons). The kid who grows upto Saif says that Eklavya was wrong. The story in short is that Eklavya(Amitabh) is the guard of a decadent royal family somewhere in Rajasthan. The mo

There is something amazing about Karan Johar and his movies... Maybe I like them more when I watch it flights where I sit in economy class and look at business class with a sense of awe even though I fly almost every second week.. Does it mean I would be happier if I get to fly business class ? That's the wrong question ... It does prick me and I sigh at times or wait with impish glee at that elusive upgrade ...the world that Karan Johar paints is similar to that ... Karan johars movies are after all the business class of bollywood entertainment.... The environment can be spotlessly squeaky and sugary sweet but the emotions are real ... Can't Mukesh Ambani have issues raising his son, just like Raichand in kabhi khushi kabhi gum ... And these emotions are the same --- Loss /discovery of love be it from girlfriends or parents / rich vs poor ...Richness is everywhere be it in the locations, upholstery or the emotions in true Bollywood style with a gaiety and pomp Ka tadka

#100days100scenes - Beginning with the Thalaivaa tribute

I grew up as an Amitabh Bacchan fan - in the early 80s, after watching Sholay. So my first scene should ideally be from his movies. However - do his movie posters get the milk offering like this..? While Big B took a political break in the 80s, Rajnikanth was moving from strength to strength. In 1991 Thalapathi was released after the success of 2 other Rajni movies , Rajathi Raja and Mapillai. A Mani Ratnam tour de force , it was a commercial blockbuster with scenes bursting with intensity and superior acting from an ensemble cast of Mamooty, Arvind Swamy, Shobana, Amrish Puri, Srividya, and many more. Thalapathi although it gave full credence to Rajnis status was probably the last 'non superstar' movie by the superstar. In 1992 Annamalai ,a rehash of the Hindi movie Khudgarz created the superstar movie template - an entry song, a man with a heart of gold who is likeable, who loses everything towards the end of the second hour and gets it all back in the last hour.
